Abstract

Onychomycosis is a wide distributed fungal nail infection which can be caused by dermatophytes, yeasts or non-dermatophytic fungi. In our study a total of 50 patients with clinically suspected of onychomycosis of type distal and lateral subungual onychomycosis (DLSO) were screened. Males comprised 8 cases constituting 16 % of total cases and females were 42 comprising 84 % of total cases. The patient{u2019}s ages ranged from 12 to 62 years. Out of 50 onychomycosis cases, 36 patients were suffering from toe infection and 14 cases from finger infection comprising 72 % and 28 % of total cases respectively. We evaluated the antifungal effect of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) against the positive culture fungal isolates namely Aspergillus flavus(8 isolates), Aspergillus niger(13 isolates), Candida albicans(8 isolates), Candida. tropicalis(5 isolates), Epidermophyton floccosum(1 isolates),Trichophyton mentagrophytes(2 isolates) and Trichophyton rubrum (1 isolate).Spherical form of gold nanoparticles was prepared by citrate reduction method in a concentration of 200 og/ml and particle size of 10±2 nm, and they were not toxic to HFB4(human fibroblast cells)
