Abstract

Background Asthma is a multifactorial disease and its severity varies with the inflammatory grade. Bronchial asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the respiratory tract, characterized by air way hyper-responsiveness. Trace elements are essential components of antioxidant enzymes and optimal function of the immune response.Changes in the levels of these elements may lead to increase the risk of asthma. Zinc, Magnesium,Copper, Iron and Lead are important trace elements in the preservation of immune resistance. There are conflicting reports about the roles of trace elements in asthma. This study examined the effects of Zinc (Zn), Magnesium (Mg) , Iron (Fe) , Copper (Cu), and Lead (Pb) concentrations on Egyptian children with asthma attending the Allergy Clinic at the National Research Center (NRC) and Pediatric Clinic of the National Institute of Laser Enhance Science (NILES), Cairo University. Patients and Methods: The researcher enrolled 120 children with age ranging between (4-12) years old and divided into three groups. group 1 consisted of 40 children diagnosed as cases of controlled asthma. group 2 consisted of 40 children diagnosed as cases of uncontrolled asthma. group 3 consisted of 40 normal children as control. Asthmatic children were classified according to GINA 2015.They were subjected to history taking, clinical examination, complete blood counting, and measurement of serum levels of total IgE by ELISA , eosinophil count and Trace metals (Zn, Cu, Pb, Mg and Fe) by using Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS)
