Abstract

Background: Many benign and malignant salivary gland tumors, whether metastatic or primary commonly necessitate radical parotidectomy with facial nerve sacrifice. Objective: to investigate the effect of low level laser and exercise on facial nerve palsy post radical parotidectomy. Methods: The current study was enrolled on Forty five patients (26 males and 19 female) with radical parotidectomy, complaining from paralyzed facial nerve had participated in this study, their ages ranged from 35 to 65 years. They were randomly selected from National Cancer Institute (NCI), Cairo University.They were divided randomly into three groups of equal numbers (15 patients each); group (A): (laser and exercises group) who received laser therapy in addition to facial expression exercises, while group (B) (exercises group) who received facial expression exercises and group (C) (laser group) who received laser therapy, All patients were evaluated before and after six successive weeks of treatment program by using Sunnybrook facial grading system (SFGS) and millimeter ruler. Results: There was a significant difference improvement in all measured variables of post treatment values between three groups in favor of group (A).The analysis of the results of the current study revealed a significant improvement in facial never paralyzed post radical parotidectomy with a significant improvement in group (A) then group (B) and lastly group (C). Statistical significance was established at the conventional 0.05 level. (p<0.05) Conclusions: Low level laser therapy and exercises have a significant effect in improving the facial nerve paralyzed post radical parotidectomy
