Abstract

Early intervention is a system designed to provide a comprehensive and integrated array of resources and supports to families whose children are experiencing or are at risk of intellectual disability. The objective of early intervention is to help create an environment that fosters children’s development as optimally as possible and to establish a developmental trajectory that will ultimately enable them to carry out their goals and live with minimal amount of assistance as possible. Early intervention also provides sufficient information to enable families to understand the influences and features of their child’s development. It helps families to accept and support their children, taking in consideration that family priorities are respected and supported.
This is an intervention study that included 29 children with intellectual disability of genetic etiology, who consulted Medical Genetics Centre, Faculty of Medicine, Ain Shams University in the period between 2017-2018.
The aim of this study was to assess the impact of integrated program of rehabilitation among intellectually disabled children of genetic etiology. The Portage Program was used to provide the early intervention services.
In this study, there was a positive impact of implementation of The Portage program of early intervention on the development of children with intellectual disability of genetic etiology. The intervention program had an integrated effect on various domains of children development (cognitive, self-help, language, motor and social domains). Compliance of the child in attending the intervention sessions constitutes a fundamental factor in the impact of the results of the intervention program. Children with associated congenital anomalies had a positive impact of the intervention program as those without associated congenital anomalies due to early detection and management of the associated medical problems and regular follow up along with the implementation of the early intervention program.
