Abstract

Purpose: To determine the efficacy of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) on
facial nerve regeneration in Bell’s palsy patients versus electrical therapy (comparative study) by using various methods of evaluation: Electromyography (EMG), house brackmann scale (HBS), sunnybrock scale (SS) and facial disability index(FDI). Methods: Forty five patients with Bell’s palsy (BP) participated in this study. Their ages were from 18 to 45 years, they were recruited from the out patient clinic of the National Institute of Laser and faculty of physical therapy, Cairo University; they were divided into three groups. group (A) received low-level laser therapy (LLLT) in combination with traditional therapy two times/week for six weeks. group (B) received electrical stimulation(ES) in combination with traditional therapy two times/week for six weeks and group (C) received traditional therapy only ( exercises, massage and medications) for six weeks. Results and Conclusion: The result showed that LLLT can be considered an effective therapeutic modality in the management of Bell’s palsy in comparison with electrical stimulation, as evidenced by the highly significant difference in EMG and the various scales.
