Abstract

The main objective of this study is to differentiate between different soils types in Egypt by using the sound properties of soils in the audible sound domain (20- 20,000 Hz). In order to do this, high precision seismic/sound records data in the frequency domain 20-8,000 Hz were collected from seventeen sites around the Egypt, after that analyzed these records by creating program able to produce very high precision spectrograms for each site. The spectrograms are originally used by scientists in voice recognition studies. By playing the ”spectrograms sounds”, we were able to separate between different soils by human ear. While high-strength rocks or soils tend to show sharp sound pitches, weaker soils show lower sound pitches. Then used the voice recognition methods to differentiate between different soils by creating a program that are capable of producing high-quality MFCC curves and VQ plot for each site, which they are considered a unique phenomenon for each soil like fingerprint/ voiceprint. By using MFCC curves and VQ plot can be easily discriminated between different soils types in Egypt (e.g. weak soils, intermediate soils, and strong soils)
