Abstract

Background and objectives: hepatic focal lesion either benign or malignant could be easily biopsied by CT or US-FNA maneuver. Few studies have established the viability and safety of EUS{u2011}FNA liver biopsy, the aim of this study is to evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of EUS and EUS-FNA in diagnosis of liver lesions whether benign or malignant including primary and metastatic lesions. Methods: diagnostic cross-sectional study conducted on 43 patients with suspected gastrointestinal or pancreatic tumors with radiological evidence of hepatic focal lesions, referred for EUS and EUS FNA for diagnosis and staging of the primary tumor. Results: EUS can detect and sample all hepatic focal lesions; 88.37% of patients had malignant lesion and 11.63% had benign ones. The cytopathological diagnosis of biopsy proved malignant lesions in (81.4%) of patients while benign lesions found in (18.6%) of patients. The diagnostic accuracy of EUS-LB was perfect; hence, it had 100% sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV and accuracy. Conclusion: The diagnostic utility of EUS-FNA biopsy in diagnosing hepatic focal lesion whatever the site of lesion (right or left) was perfect; in addition, only one passage for biopsy can give the same accuracy with higher sensitivity and specificity
