Abstract

Mango Mangifera indica L., is the third major fruit crop of Egypt. Four newly introduced mango cultivars, namely Aya, Kasturi, Maya and Omer grown in a private mango orchard at El-Giza district, were evaluated during two successive seasons of 2018 and 2019. Flowering and harvesting dates, growth characters, yield per tree, biennial bearing index and fruit physical and chemical properties were determined. The evaluation indicates that Omer cultivar was the earlier cultivar in terms of flowering date, while Aya and Kasturi cultivars were observed to be the earlier cultivars of harvest date. The highest significant values of leaf area and the number of panicles per 10 branches were recorded with Omer cultivar, which also recorded the highest yield per tree. The four cultivars under study were regular in bearing since the highest percentage of the biennial bearing index was only (8.59 %). The highest values of pulp percentage were recorded with Omer and Kasturi cultivars. Maya cultivar showed the heaviest seed weight followed by Kasturi cultivar during the two seasons. As for fruit pulp firmness, Aya cultivar recorded the highest significant values at the maturity and the ripe stages in the two seasons. Omer cultivar recorded the lowest total acidity percentages in both seasons. The highest value of T.S.S. in the fruit juice (19.07 %) was recorded for Maya cultivar in the two seasons. Maya cultivar also exhibited the highest significant values of total sugars, total phenols and vitamin C during both seasons. The use of SCoT and ISSR molecular markers were valuable for studying the genetic diversity and genetic relationships among mango genotypes. The two PCR-based protocols revealed sufficient results that can be used in the discrimination of mango cultivars. The study revealed the importance of the four newly introduced cultivars under study for mango breeding, provide new materials for the future breeding program of local mango germplasm, to satisfy the local and export market requirements
