Abstract

ABSTRACT
Background: Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) infection is a major global health challenge; it is estimated that more than 80 million people are chronically infected worldwide, with 3–4 million new infections and 350 000 deaths occurring each year because of HCV-related complications.
Objective: To evaluate value of handgrip strength in assessment of sarcopenia in HCV related chronic liver disease patients
Patients and Methods: This study was conducted on 64 adult participants older than 18 years. They were randomly recruited from the outpatient clinics at department of internal Medicine in Ain Shams University hospital during the period from June 2018 to August 2019.
Results: Our study was conducted on 64 subjects. 32 subjects with HCV related liver cirrhosis (10 Females and 22 Males) their ages ranged from 20 years up to 65 years, with mean of 42.1±6.75 years, collected from outpatient clinics in Ain Shams University hospital, internal medicine department. And this group was subdivide into 2 subgroups: The first one Child A and 16 patients were included while the second one Child C and 16 patients were included. 32 healthy volunteers (15 Males and 17 Females) their age ranged from 28 years to 55 years with mean of 42.06±8.1 years, This study was performed from June 2018 to August 2019.
Conclusion: Sarcopenia is a major concern in liver cirrhosis of different etiologies particularly in advanced cirrhosis and in those patients scheduled for liver transplantation.
