Abstract

When children attempt to learn an L2, this is done either additionally after an L1 is well and truly established, or it is acquired simultaneously while learning the L1. Adults, when introduced to an L2 in adulthood, experience the acquisition in a different way than children. This thesis is based on an experimental study introducing the process of acquiring correct pronunciation of English as an L2 through exposure to connected speech processes focusing on final alveolar /n/ assimilation to initial letters in assimilable environments through quantitative measures.. The study also focuses on gemination in connected speech and investigates the ways adults and children differ in their output when exposed to rules of Tajweed of the Glorious Qur’an. This is done by using autosegmental phonology and Praat software.
To establish the above, the thesis is divided into six chapters as follows:
Chapter one serves as an introduction to the thesis through stating the problem, displaying the hypothesis and posing several research questions.
Chapter two gives an overview of the most relevant research areas which discuss concepts such as child language acquisition, critical period hypothesis and phonology of children’s language. In addition, it introduces different dialects of Arabic and discusses phonological processes of assimilation of nasal /n/ in these dialects as well as in English. An introduction on aspects of the Glorious Qur’an is then discussed with details on features of Tajweed as well as the impact of Qur’anic reading on language learning in young children.
Chapter three introduces the framework of autosegmental phonology. It gives an account of the theory discussing several aspects related to it and explains how the theory is applicable to the current thesis and why it was chosen as a framework. It also displays the methodology used in the thesis. The study employed a quantitative approach where collection of data and analysis were done on two groups: one consisting of children at the preschool level, and one including adults, in two separate experiments. The researcher’s aim was to maintain whether there were differences in levels of proficiency of English pronunciation between the two groups included in each experiment and if there were differences between adults’ and children’s respective levels of development at the end of the treatment.
Chapter four gives an account of the data collected as well as formulating an analysis and discussing the results which were gathered. This chapter also displays different graphs generated by the software Praat.
Chapter five sums up the previous chapters and offers some insight into interpretation of the results found in chapter five. It also addresses whether and in which ways the research questions were answered. It determines whether the hypothesis was proved or disproved. It also presents limitations of the study and offers suggestions for future research in the relevant areas.
