Abstract

The school is considered as a backbone of society, as it contributes to creating a conducive atmosphere for pupils’ mental, physical, emotional, and social growth. Accordingly, the school’s role is not limited to the school building only, but their surrounding urban open spaces. The research problem lies in ignoring the design of urban spaces surrounding the secondary schools in which pupils practice many activities, which entails random activities appearing in these spaces to suit their needs.
The thesis dealt with a study of the importance of urban spaces and the role of each level of the responsive environment, which are permeability, variety, legibility, robustness, visual appropriateness, richness, and personalization. To reach the requirements of each level through which it is possible to evaluate the response of urban spaces. The goal is to assess the responses of urban open spaces surrounding secondary schools through requirements of responsive environment levels.
The research methodology is based on three phases. The first phase depends on a theoretical part around the requirements of responsive environment levels. The second phase depends on interviews with pupils and interviews with the community, while the third phase is pupils’ questionnaires, observation around three selected schools, and the space syntax method.
The study concludes with responsive environment levels requirements, realized and unrealized, in the three selected schools; and recommendations for improving the role of urban spaces surrounding secondary schools.
