Abstract

Summary.
The aim of the study is to evaluate the results of SAPI procedure in treatment of morbid obesity according to %EWL, postoperative complications, nutritional status and comorbidities resolution besides hospital stay and operative time.
SAPI procedure has promising outcomes regarding weight loss and comorbidities resolution like diabetes mellitus and hypertension in morbidly obese patients.
When compared to simple restrictive procedures including sleeve and plication, it gives better results in weight loss and comorbidities resolution.
When compared to other combined bariatric surgeries, such as RYGB, SADI-S and SASI, it gives good nutritional status postoperatively as there is no case of severe hypoalbuminemia, there are only two cases of mild anemia corrected by oral iron supplementation.
Preoperative patient counseling about the lifestyle modifications and the need for lifelong vitamins and nutrients, assessment of the socioeconomic state and preoperative nutritional state mapping are substantial steps before performing SAPI procedure.
Finally, the main aim of introducing SAPI procedure was to provide a suitable cost-effective alternative to patients with morbid obesity who cannot afford the traditional bariatric procedures of high costs.
