Abstract

UNESCO (United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization) has invented the term “whole life sustainability” in order to expand the general meaning of sustainable design from designing environmentally friendly built environments to designing process that merge with the local identity and culture. Interior architectural projects have to concern about human needs, wants and values. Human values are protected through preserving cultural identity.
Interior design is a profession that serves for the human habitation in the built environment. In the context of human needs, there are many different aspects and scales of satisfaction. Recent worldwide debates focus on a basic need that is to survive. Need of sustainable environment is a must rather than a wish, in order to survive. Sustainable design is the design of the age. It is based on the solution of environmental, social and economic problems of architectural design for providing resources and improving the quality of life for mankind. Sustainable solutions of architectural design result mainly from the principle of sustainability which is derived from natural systems and what they offer to humans.
Sustainable strategies are inspired by nature and by implementing the Biomimetic design which mimics the performance of nature and provides clean technologies; and by integrating nature into built environments by using Biophilic design and its role in achieving human well- being and improving their performance; the designer can truly serve for the human habitation in the built environment and can contribute to the development of sustainable design. Designers can design a totally sustainable project that meets all the LEED and BREEAM standards but ignores the deep human need for contact with nature. What’s really powerful is if they can create energy- efficient spaces that also incorporate natural features that help people feel comfortable, inspired and alive in the indoor spaces. Recently few rating systems care about interior design, and rarely about biomimicry or biophilic design so the research designed an interior design rating tool for Estidama.
