Abstract

A good knowledge of the corneal epithelium distribution may help a lot in many aspects of clinical work such as screening of keratoconus before corneal surgery, fitting contact lens, and increasing the accuracy of corneal refractive surgeries.
Such compensatory epithelial changes are seen in cases of asymmetric LASIK flaps, flap malposition and irregular stromal surface following multiple refractive procedures.
Demographic, ethnic, and ophthalmologic factors have been reported to be correlated with corneal thickness and these factors could also influence the CET.
In our study we used AS-OCT wide epithelial mapping to evaluate corneal epithelial thickness (CET) changes and to illustrate the distribution and variation of CET in healthy Egyptian eyes of LASIK age group.
The study was conducted in accordance with the ethical standards stated by the Ethical Committee of Ain Shams University. Informed consent was obtained from each participant following the explanation of the academic nature of the study.
Our study demonstrated the epithelial layer of the cornea had a non uniform thickness profile, as suggested in previous studies. We found the thickest part was at inferior nasal sector, and the thinnest part at the superior sector.
Our study showed the tear meniscus height was 300 μm on average. This may influence the result of the corneal epithelium distribution especially the differences between different locations.
The current study confirmed there was statistically significant negative relation found between the age of the studied subjects and thickness of the nasal part of the cornea with no correlation of the rest of quadrants.
It also confirmed that there was no statistically significant difference between males and females regarding Epithelial thickness but the thickness of males was thicker by 0.56 μm than female subjects on the central part.
Our study reports there was statistically significant difference found between the refractive status of the studied subjects (myopia and hyperopia) as regarding the central epithelial thickness of the cornea with the lower values in myopic group, while there was no statistically significant difference found between the refractive status of the studied subjects and the rest of corneal quadrants.
