Abstract

This study is used to investigate the relationships between different elastic moduli and petrophysical properties to detect the different rock types based on Material Competence scales and Material Bearing Capacity. In order to detect the different rock types using various techniques such as the hydraulic flow unit HFU and The Electrical flow unit EFU.
The measured petrophysical parameters for the Miocene (Limestone) rocks, presented by the Marmarica Formation in New El-Alamein City, North Coast, Egypt shows many fundamental rock properties. The sedimentological features of the Miocene limestone rocks were discussed using thin section petrography.
In the present work, thirty-two rock samples were collected from Marmarica Formation. These samples were subjected to numerous laboratory measurements which are conducted at Ain Shams University petrophysical lab core and the Egyptian Petroleum Research Institute (EPRI), and the British university in Egypt (BUE).
The investigation of these samples reveals that the Miocene limestone samples reflect high storage and flow capacity properties at some intervals, while in other some intervals show fair to bad storage and flow capacity properties. The hydraulic flow unit (HFU) discrimination was carried out based on the permeability-porosity empirical relationship. the diagenetic processes have an important role to enhance or reduce the pore aperture size and controlling the petrophysical rock behavior.
The porosity measurements of the samples showed that the porosity of the middle Miocene Marmarica Formation is varied from 1.95 to 46.95 % with a mean value of 29.16 % and standard deviation of 11.05 %, variance value of 28.8 %, and median value of 31.41 % while The permeability measurements of the samples showed that the permeability of the Middle Miocene rocks of the Marmarica Fm is varied from 0.0001 to 3713.59 md with a mean value of 597.407 md and standard deviation of 1006.54md, variance value of 1013130 md, and median value of 23.84 md. The results were collected together to build up different petrophysical models. The petrophysical models were represented in cross plots between the different rock properties.
Electrical resistivity properties of the sedimentary rocks are depending on the pore geometry, physio-chemical properties of rock forming minerals, fluid type and saturation percentage. In this study, Electrical resistivity (ρ) measurements were carried out on 32 samples to estimate Formation resistivity factor and cementation exponent (m). The relationship between porosity and Formation resistivity factor has been redrawn using the electrical flow unit discrimination technique. This study indicates five hydraulic flow unit (HFU) of different rock qualities. three electrical flow unit (EFU) of rock have been obtained.
Finally, the correlation between the different petrophysical parameters and the concluded sedimentological discrimination were used to construct multi regression models in order to predict the different petrophysical parameters with high correlation coefficients R2 to be applicable and useful.
