Abstract

Introduction: eriorbital hyperpigmentation (POH) is one of the most commonly encountered conditions in routine dermatology practice. There are only few published studies about its prevalence, classification, and pathogenesis but none showing its association with habits, and other medical conditions (Sheth et al., 2014). Dark circles around the eyes (DC) are defined as bilateral, round, homogeneous pigmented macules in the periorbital regions. It is caused by dermal melanin deposition, postinflammatory hyperpigmentation secondary to atopic or allergic contact dermatitis, periorbital edema, superficial location of vasculature and shadowing due to skin laxity (Taskin, 2015). They are more pronounced in certain ethnic groups and are also frequently seen in multiple members of the same family (Taskin, 2015) The Aim of this study: To determine the dermatoscopic patterns of periorbital hyperpigmentation, causes and its association with personal habits and other disorders. Materials and methods: This study was carried out on two hundred patients aged between (20-50) years attending the outpatient clinic of Dermatology, Andrology & STDs Department, Mansoura University Hospitals. Informed consent was taken from every patient. Results; most common causes POH are: life style factors; lack of sleep, stress, alchol overuse and smoking, genetic, positive family history, postinflammatory hyperpigmentation, due to atopic or allergic contact dermatitis, anemia, use of cosmetics, photosensitivity, superficial location of vasculature, shadowing due to skin laxity and aging, tear trough depression, accentuation of pigmentary demarcation line of face, druges as ocular hypotensive druges like latanoprost and bimoatoprost, oral contraceptive drugs, associated disorders as, acanthosis nigricans, melasma, erythema dyschormicum perstans, ecchmosis, amyloidosis, dermatomyositis, medical diseases as, gastrointestinal disease, renal and thyroid disease. Conclusion:. • Periorbital pigmentation is a complex entity with multifactorial etiology. • Management of periorbital hyperpigmentation (POH) is still a therapeutic challenge. • POH is essentially a clinical diagnosis, but dermoscopy aids in further classification of the disease. Also give us a clue regarding the etiology and treatment.
