Abstract

This study aims at investigating how Trump communicates with the least possible characters to convey messages that bear a certain ideology and champion his interests. It also investigates how language is used as a persuasive tool to manipulate others’ opinions. To this respect, this study examines 59 of Trump’s tweets that he posted on his account (@realdonaldtrump) during and after the 2016 presidential election campaign from a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) perspective. The study adopts Fairclough’s three-dimensional (3D) model, based on Halliday’s Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG) to reveal hidden ideologies and identify any linguistic deviations in those tweets. This study discusses the questions of how Trump’s tweets form a new type of political discourse and how a tweet could be an ideological carrier. The thesis is also set to test the validity of the hypothesis that Trump uses tweets as a persuasion tool to convey his ideologies. The findings of the thesis indicate that Trump’s tweets contain a number of ideologies, such as racism, nativism, antagonism, and self-glorification. Another finding is that Trump’s power stems from the his chauvinism and sense of superiority.
