Abstract

I
nternet access is becoming readily available every day, and more than half the world’s population is reported to be using the Internet. This may promote public health with respect to provision of information, facilitation of pro-social activities and other factors. However, this increase is also associated with documented cases of excessive use that warrant consideration
In general, addiction is defined as the compulsive use of a substance or behavior without paying attention to negative life consequences, Internet addiction (IA) is defined as the presence of excessive or poorly controlled urges, cravings and preoccupations associated with internet usage leading to marked distress or functional impairments of social, occupational, and academic performance.
In this cross-sectional study, we tried to address the problem of internet addiction by analyzing the model of relations between Internet addiction, self-esteem, and their effect with other behavioral addictions and their effect on the student’s quality of life in a sample of Ain shams university students and we tried to answer three questions about the prevalence of IA among Ain Shams university students, the nature of the different risk factors contributing to IA among Ain Shams university students and the type of the relationship between IA and self-esteem among Ain Shams university students.
The study was conducted on a sample of Undergraduate students from both scientific and literature faculties. It lasted from February 2019 until the end of June 2019.
We used An Anonymous Arabic questionnaire consisting of three parts: the first part covered Personal, Sociodemographic and Socio-Economic data: such as age, gender, residence, faculty name and previous year grade, parents’ education, occupation, and Family Income, Patterns of internet use (Internet access place(s), device(s), number of use years, how many hours spent online and type of internet activity), also questions about the satisfaction with the body shape and weight and questions about the possible physical health side effects of IA, the second part used A validated Arabic version of Young’s internet addiction scale & And the third part used a validated Arabic version of Rosenberg’s self-esteem scale.
A Pilot study was carried out to test the questionnaire using around 11 % of the sample size, 150 students, these questionnaires were not included in the final analysis, from which we got to Correct some words and statements to make the questionnaire clearer, also we got to estimate the time needed for the administration of the questionnaire and we found out that there was no need to change or alter the hypotheses nor the procedures. prevalence of high levels of internet addiction among the pilot study sample students provided us with enough data to go ahead with the main study, also there was a negative relationship between Rosenberg self-esteem score and the internet addiction tests score, indicating that the students who are internet addicts display low self-esteem and vice versa.
Among a total of 1408 distributed questionnaires on Ain Shams University students, 1308 were included in the final analysis and the response rate was 92.89%. One Hundred questionnaires were excluded from statistical analysis due to the incomplete responses of the students. The students were selected randomly after a list of their classes were obtained on the days of data collection using bowel method for their classes, then stratified random sampling in the classes from 6 colleges; 3 from the scientific group (Medicine, Nursing, Computer science) and 3 from the literature group (Business, literature, law).
The collected data was revised, coded, tabulated and introduced to a PC using Statistical package for Social Science (SPSS 25). Data was presented and suitable analysis was done according to the type of data obtained for each parameter.
This study highlights the troubling reality of the high prevalence of IA among students of Ain shams University (89.7% including 7% who had severe IA), the most important predictors of IA were having higher education or a university degree for the students’ mothers, access to the internet for studying purposes & social networking on twitter & Instagram or easy internet access at home or at friends & using the internet for 7 hours daily, also we found self-esteem to be a negative predictor of Internet addiction. There was no significant relationship between internet addiction nor self-esteem and the Smoking habits of the students, also we found that higher and normal self-esteem were positively associated with weight satisfaction & low & normal BMIs of the students, yet they had no association with their internet addiction levels.
We recommend the formulation of Comprehensive programs to raise the public awareness about the hazards and determinants of IA, these programs should emphasize on targeting adolescents, and young adults, also students need to be educated about safe, valuable, and healthy practice of internet use to overcome the anticipated increase in IA among young adults in Egypt.
