Abstract

The popularity and increase use of streaming television smartphone
applications such as Netflix, Amazon Video, Shahid, and etc. have
contributed to a specific mode of television viewing called “Binge-
Watching”. Binge-watching is defined as “the act of consuming two or
more episodes of the same television show in one sitting” As there is an
increase in the number of individuals that watch back-to-back episodes
in a single sitting there has been recent popularity in this research topic.
Thus, this study aimed at identifying and understanding the role of
binge-watching in smartphone television applications that are available
to the Egyptian youth. The study employed two main theories; Third
Person effect and Diffusion of Innovation theory. The study is based on
descriptive research, where quantitative and qualitative methods were
used. The researcher conducted first a qualitative content analysis of
television smartphone applications available in the Egyptian market to
Egyptian Youth (n=9). Then, Survey method was used, where an online
questionnaire was distributed among 400 respondents to measure their
binge-watching behavior, and their use of smartphone television
applications (n=400). Findings showed a third person effect in
respondents’ binge-watching behavior and a positive correlation
between the characteristics of an innovation and binge-watching on
television smartphone applications.
