Abstract

Background: Cervical cancer is a leading cause of cancer death for women all across the developing world, where much of the infrastructure required for effective cervical cancer screening is unavailable because of limited resources. Given inherent challenges in analysis and documentation when characterizing cervical tissue with the naked eye, an optical solution is needed. To address this challenge, a smartphone was modified and transformed into a method that can be used as an effective method for cervical screening.
Objective: To evaluate the feasibility of using the camera of the smart-mobile phone as a screening method for cervical cancers and its pre-malignant lesions to aid visual inspection of the cervix and sharing images with available mobile applications for improving diagnostic quality.
Patients and Methods: The study was conducted at Ain Shams University Maternity Hospital, Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department, Faculty of medicine.
Results: The sensitivity of direct visual inspection of the cervix using the camera of the smart phone is 92.3 % and specificity is 91.5 %
Conclusion: Cervical digital photography using mobile phone camera is a highly promising method in cervical cancer screening either as a primary tool or in co-testing especially in low resource setting as most of the developing countries where the infrastructure and public health awareness regarding the importance of early cervical screening are defective. The next era will show a great progression in the field of electronic cervical screening especially with the rapid progression in the mobile technology with higher quality for the images taken.
