Abstract

With the expansion of electrical grids and the increasing penetration of renewable energy sources, there were fluctuations and variations in electrical power. These fluctuations and variations have to be mitigated to assure reliable and stable operation of electrical grids. One of the most promising energy storage devices is the superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) system, which can provide a large amount of power in a short time with high efficiency compared to other storage systems. However, a SMES device is a DC current device that stores energy in the magnetic field, which necessitates special interfacing power electronics converters when integrated with AC grids. The SMES devices are commonly connected with the three-phase AC grids via thyristor-controlled converters, voltage-source converters (VSCs), and current-source-converters (CSCs), which have some drawbacks.
