Abstract

Dentofacial deformity (DFD) is a multifactorial condition which affects the position and the size of the upper and lower jaws. DFD Patients exhibit different symptoms including impaired chewing, deglutition, phonation, breathing.
Orthognathic patients are always concerned about the timing of returning to normal masticatory function. In our study , we are comparing between the Bilateral Sagittal Split Osteotomy (BSSO) and the Intraoral Vertical Ramus Osteotomy (IVRO) regarding the biting force progress during the different phases of healing.
Fourteen patients (6 males and 8 females with a mean age of 21.9 years ± 2.3) were included in the current study.
Patients were divided randomly into two groups, each group consisted of 7 patients (group 1: BSSO) and (group 2: IVRO). group 1 had a setback mean value of 5.9 mm ± 0.9 while group 2 had a setback mean value of 6.6 mm ± 1.0.
* There were no significant differences in the biting force between the BSSO and the IVRO during different followup periods; preoperatively, one week postop (BSSO) – 6 weeks postop (IVRO) and 6 months postop.
* A 3 months followup, the BSSO showed significant higher values than the IVRO which means that the BSSO might offer faster muscular adaptaion than the IVRO.
* IVRO had less operative time than the BSSO.
