Abstract

Chronic kidney diseases (CKD) is considered a major problem facing communities as it can lead to end stage kidney disease (ESKD) I not well controlled. Renal replacement therapy (RRT) especially hemodialysis is considered the treatment of choice for those patients. One of the major complications of hemodialysis is that it alters the metabolism of muscles increasing its catabolic rate which in term increases the sensation of fatigue for those patients. Engagement of those patients in regular active exercises is considered the key limiting these complications.
60 patients of those on regular hemodialysis in dialysis centers of Misr university hospital were recruited. They were divided into 2 groups; cases group and control group. For both groups; we measured the quality of life using kidney disease quality of life score (KDQOL) at baseline. Regular physical exercises were applied for the cases group for 6 months then KDQOL was measured again.
we recruited 60 patients with mean age of 52.83 ± 15.4 years old. 71.7% of them (43 patients) were males. HTN was the most commonly found cause for hemodialysis (46.7%, 28 patients). They were performing hemodialysis for within a mean period of 3.98 ± 2.7 years. Mean scores of KDQOL was not significantly different between both groups (31.26 ± 4.5 vs 31.26 ± 3.98, p=1.00). after application of physical exercises to the cases group, we found that there was a slight improvement in the quality of life with mean KDQOL of 31.26 ± 4.5 vs 32.63 ± 3.38 for both groups respectively but this was statistically insignificant (p=0.213).
Hemodialysis is the lifesaving treatment for patients with ESKD. However, it still have some complications which affect the quality of life of those patients as sensation of chronic fatigue due to affection of the metabolic state of muscles. Engagement of those patients into regular active exercises is important to slow the progression of these complications.
