Abstract

Background: Rheumatic heart disease is one of the most common and preventable acquired heart diseases . Rheumatic heart disease remains a cause of cardiac morbidity in Egypt although it is given full attention through a national rheumatic heart disease prevention and control program. This makes it important to assess mothers practices and prevention for their children at risk for rheumatic heart disease. Aim: Assess mother’s prevention for their children at risk for RHD. Design: A descriptive exploratory analytical study design was used. Setting: The study was conducted at MCH centers affiliated to the health departments of Alsharkia governorate, Egypt. Sample: A purposive sample of 300 mothers. Tools: one tool were used, an interviewing questionnaire composed of three parts to assess mother’s knowledge and practices. Results: The study finding revealed that the children median age was (9.42±2.35), more than one third of them had risk factors for RHD, the mothers median age was (33.67±5.8), more than two thirds of them had unsatisfactory knowledge regarding RHD, and less than one fifth of them never follow practices regarding prevention of RHD. Additionally there were a highly statistically significant correlation between total knowledge of mothers and their demographic data (age, level of education, occupation and number of family members (p-value <0.05)). Conclusion: More than two thirds of mothers had total unsatisfactory knowledge regarding prevention of RHD. One third or the children had risk factors for RHD. About one fifth of the mothers never follow practices regarding prevention of RHD. Recommendations: Provide educational program to mothers of (5:15) children and encourage mothers to participate in primary prevention of their children from RHD. And activating the role of visual, audio and read media in raising awareness about RHD.
