Abstract

Although food may have an obvious effect on sexuality in both men and women, its effect on female sexual function is usually underestimated.
The current study aimed to evaluate the impact of food on various aspects of sexuality in women.
This study was carried out on 300 married women aged 20 – 50+ years having a regular sexual relation and eating different types of foods. We used a self-report questionnaire designed by the investigators and translated into Arabic. Questionnaire consisted of 21 questions that covered different aspects of female sexuality and its relation to food.
The results of this study showed that:
• Most of participants 63% were in the age group of 30-39 years.
• Commonest coital frequency was 2-3 times per week which was suitable for 45.7% of the studied women. On the other hand, spontaneous desire was reported by 43.0% of women to occur 2-3 times per week. FGM/C was reported by 49.7% of the studied group.
• Most of participants 41.0% felt vaginal lubrication in almost all sexual encounters.
• Part of the participants 32.3% reached orgasm in more than half the times of sexual encounters.
• Regarding sexual satisfaction, 47.3% reported being moderately satisfied and 38.3% were very satisfied.
• Seafood was the most common type of food that affects female sexual behaviour 69.3% followed by chocolate 45.2%.
• Among participants, 82.9% consider that the positive effects of food were increasing their libido, 12.6% increasing their orgasm, 4.5% prolonging time of lubrication.
• As regard negative effect on female sexuality, oils were found to be the most effective in decreasing libido 39.4%. Herbs were the commonest negative effector on orgasm 48.0%. While white meat was the commonest to decrease lubrication 66.7%.
• Among participants, 68.7% estimate the positive effects of food on their husbands by increasing husband’s libido 17.4%, increasing the frequency of intercourse, 13.9% increasing the duration of intercourse.
• Seafood was the most common type of food that affects husband’s sexual activity 84.2% followed by nuts 27%.
