Abstract

The aim of this study to design a tool for measuring nurse teacher performance and ascertain its validity and reliability through developing a job description for nurse teacher, designing a tool to evaluate nurse teacher based on the developed job description, and verifying the developed evaluation tool. The study was conducted in all secondary technical-nursing schools affiliated to the Directorate of Health Affairs in Cairo Governorate. Subjects consisted of nurse teachers and headmasters, and jury experts. Three samples of nurse teachers and/or their headmasters group were included: one for eliciting opinions regarding content of job description (53 nurse teachers and 14 headmaster), one for observation (45 nurse teachers), and one for the evaluation checklist (36 nurse teachers). Two jury groups were included: one for validation of job description (72 experts in education: 36 internal and 36 external), and one for validation of the proposed evaluation checklist (60 experts in education: 30 internal and 30 external). The data collection tools included a questionnaire sheet, an observation checklist, an opinionnaire sheet for job description validation, an opinionnaire sheet for validation of the evaluation checklist, and an evaluation checklist. The results revealed a majority agreement of both teachers and their headmasters upon all items of the proposed job description. It was also face and content validated by jury group members’ majority agreement. The majority of nurse teachers had adequate performance of job description items, with the in-class slightly better than the outside. The developed evaluation checklist, based on the job description was validated by unanimous agreement of juries. It proved to be of high reliability through inter-rater and intra-rater testing. It is recommended to apply the developed job description and evaluation checklist in the study settings and similar ones. Nurse teachers should be made aware of their job description and the method of their evaluation. The developed job description should be used for training, orientation, in-service education, and performance evaluation of the jobholder.
