Abstract

Models of 2D frames of different heights were constructed to simulate the seismic demand at coastal regions of the Sinai Peninsula on the Mediterranean Sea, and to study the effects of infills during a seismic event.
Effects of infills during a seismic event were looked in detail from three main perspectives: contribution of infill to energy absorption, effects on performance level and effects on performance factor (P-factor).
Equations are suggested to estimate the P-factor values required to design structures to follow the intended performance level and without the need to undergo the repetitive non-linear procedures of the pushover analysis.
Recommendations for future researches can be summarized into studying the effects of reinforced infills on the P-factor for different performance level frames. Infill irregularities, such as soft-story and/or short column effects, and their effects on the performance of the frames also need to be studied.
Moreover, 3D modelling of the infilled structures needs to be created to study the effects of different in-plane distribution of infill. Also, more studies shall be performed considering a various range of infill materials to conclude wider understandings of infill contribution on the performance of the structures.
