Abstract

Load frequency control (LFC) is an important issue which inspires scientists to solve it due to its relative importance to the power systems. The increased population rates in the last years led to an increase in the load demands which motivated the government to establish new stations to cover the demand gap and thus the load frequency control becomes a vital issue.
Renewable energy stations like PV, Wind and hydropower plant have been paid great concern from all governments around the world and here in Egypt the government is establishing the largest PV plant in the middle east at Aswan area (Benban Solar Park) in addition to one of the largest plants of wind farms in the middle east at red sea area. So studying the effect of incorporating these stations with the gird and its effect on the load frequency is a very important issue which leads the Egyptian scientists to search about it and hence the load frequency control came into consideration. So for that reason studying this effect and methods of control are the scopes of this thesis.
This thesis proposes the application of an online adaptive control method using a new optimization method which is called Jaya with balloon effect. This optimization technique is used to tune the gain of the integral controller during the system operation. The new optimization method results are compared with the results of the conventional integral controller, Particle swarm optimization (PSO), Genetic algorithm (GA) and JAYA optimization method.
In this thesis, different electric power systems are tested to validate the results like single area system and two area systems with different linkage methods using AC linkage and DC-AC parallel linkage. The types of plants used in this thesis are conventional sources and renewable energy sources. The tested conventional source is a thermal power plant which can be with a reheat or non-reheat turbine, while the renewable energy sources are PV plant, Wind plant and hydropower plant.
The Matlab Simulink software is used to validate the results and ensure that the proposed online approach using the new optimization method JAYA with balloon effect is the better, more reliable and effective in comparison with the other optimization algorithms.
