Abstract

Resilience, is the capacity of any system to mitigate and heal, from challenges or disturbances, and it is becoming an important concept of academic study in a range of knowledge fields. Although the majority of research in resilience is derived in relation to the built environment from an ecology perspective, however heritage preservation has also made a strong connection with resilience concept. This study develops the notion of resilience in heritage preservation from architectural and technological perspective to expand its potential as an emerging concept beyond ecology concerns.
This research investigates the opportunities of utilizing innovative technologies to achieve resilience approach to preserve efficient heritage buildings by depending on theoretical approach and experimental field study, concerning the theoretical approach the research analyzed the motivations, values and inefficiencies in preservation process. In addition, a comparison is conducted between the latest techniques for enhancing the efficiency of heritage buildings, which results in choosing resilience concept supported by technologies utilization to work as a tool for a practical implementation of resilience concept. In addition, a comparison is conducted between the successful case studies which implemented technologies in their projects, and managed to enhance their adoption through studying their local challenges and targets then made strategies and standards to overcome those threats, and then applied successful actions which can help with proposing the framework attributes and the integrated technology solution.
The experimental study includes an example of a simulated worksite located in USA that combine resilience with technologies to analyze its benefits and challenges through a practical implementation, as resilience and innovative technologies utilization in buildings is limited due to the novelty of the approach. Besides conducting an interview with 54 professionals in diverse fields to accumulate the preliminary proposed frameworks of each chapter into one integrated methodology that is validated by the survey analysis, then practically implementing the proposed framework into an integrated software solution composed of Reconstruct, “Artificial intelligence” and “internet of things” application in specific heritage building which is Batarji house located in KSA.
The research shows that integrating innovative technologies with resilience concept to propose resilience framework for heritage building enhance the efficiency of heritage building into the whole preservation phases from the planning phase till the occupancy and monitoring phase.
