Abstract

This thesis focuses on “the Childhood in Coptic art”, starting from the fourth to the tenth century AD, through a historical and archaeological study. This thesis is divided into two volumes: text and catalogue that contains about eighty plates. The first volume includes an introduction, four chapters and a conclusion. The first chapter entitled “the Aspects of the Coptic Childhood” shows the details of the educational, religious, social and medical life of the Coptic children. The second chapter entitled “the Daily Life Objects of Children”; deals with the tools of the children used during their daily life in particular wooden toys, linen textiles, woolen sock and leather sandals.
The researcher not only discussed these topics, but also focused in the third chapter entitled “the Figures of the Children in Coptic Art”, on the wall paintings, icons, manuscripts and textiles preserved in some international archeological museums. Finally, the fourth chapter entitled “a Comparative Study between the Coptic and Byzantine Artistic Collections Depicting Children Figures” includes a study of some icons, textiles, and manuscripts depicting the figure of children in the Byzantine art. This chapter shows also the main differences between the two arts.
