Abstract

In the light of 2015 Canadian federal election, the thesis conducts a multimodal critical discourse analysis of Justin Trudeau’s and Stephen Harper’s Facebook posts. This is done through using Machin’s and Mayr’s toolkit (2012) that helps in conducting multimodal critical discourse analysis of the linguistic and visual modes. This thesis aims to prove the importance of the other modes besides the linguistic mode, shed the light on and compare the linguistic and visual techniques used by the candidates in their Facebook pages to reveal the candidates’ ideologies, determine how the two modes work together and complement each other, and state which mode is more influential. The findings reveal, after comparing the techniques used in the candidates’ Facebook posts, that Trudeau perfectly made use of the linguistic and visual techniques where he depended on inclusiveness and multiculturalism tone to reach out to all Canadians of all ages, genders and ethnicities compared to Harper that adopted fearmongering to get the constituents’ support through striking fear in them and leading them into thinking that he is the only one alive that can protect Canada from economic collapse and terrorism. In addition, it is found that the verbal and visual modes complement each other and that the messages are conveyed accurately when both modes are present.
