Abstract

T
his systematic review demonstrates similar functional outcomes, radiographic outcomes and complications with IM nails and plates used in the treatment of both-bone diaphyseal forearm fractures in children. No study found statistically significant differences in functional outcome (range of motion) between plating and IM nailing.
Despite methodological deficiencies of the studies included, IM nailing has been shown as an effective and safe treatment option for those fractures, associated with shorter operation time, improved cosmesis, and easier hard ware removal.
Considering the results of this systematic review and previous studies, there is considerable scope for further trials. As discussed, limitations of the studies included selection bias and confounding factors related to baseline characteristics of each participant group. Additional Prospective, randomized trials with observer blinding and use of patient-reported, functional, disease-specific outcome scores are recommended to reveal differences between the two techniques.
