Abstract

Characterisation of failure by fracture of polymers and polymeric fibre can provide valuable feedback for engineers, chemists and other people responsible for producing high quality products and machine parts. This knowledge is crucial to enhance the endurance, quality and lifetime of these products. Prevention of fracture is vital, especially at early stages of design and development of parts and products. Also, such knowledge is important to minimize the sources of materials failure during service by finding the appropriate precautions and optimum application conditions by understanding the behaviour of the material and its performance under the influence of different factors, e.g. environmental conditions and processing techniques. Failure of iPP fibre is a result of contributions of many parameters, like temperature and stretching rate. In this work, these parameters were addressed during different processing stages. Their effect on the quality of iPP monofilaments was analysed. Then, the acquired fractographic knowledge and failure analysis data were applied to obtain the optimum processing and service conditions of the iPP fibres.
