Abstract

One of the goals of educational dental hospitals is to provide the patients with the highest possible quality of dental services to meet their needs. Nowadays, numerous instruments have been developed to evaluate healthcare services quality. Patient satisfaction provides a useful tool to evaluate the dental care services and oral health care provided. In this study, the level of patients, satisfaction with the quality of dental services provided at Tanta dental college has been investigated. A random sample of 900 participants was selected from outpatient clinics of Faculty of Dentistry, Tanta University. Patient, s satisfaction was determined using validated Arabic version of Dental Satisfaction Questionnaire. Direct interviews with the participants were made in a neutral setting to minimize the problems of non-understanding of any question. In addition to the socio-demographic characteristics, the questionnaire included 19 items divided into four domains including patient–dentist interaction, technical competency, administrative efficiency and clinic setup environment. Approval from the Research Ethics Committee was assured and informed consents were obtained from participants. The majority of patients were in the age group between 20 to 39 years. In addition, the highest percentages of participants were females with monthly income more than 1200 Egyptian pounds. Moreover, the highest proportion of participants were married participants and were unemployed. In the current study, the highest rate of the participants, satisfaction was recorded from patient-dentist interaction, followed by technical competency and administrative efficiency. On the other hand, the least satisfaction was reported from clinic setup environment. There was no significant association between socio-demographic characteristics of the study sample including age, gender, nationality, occupation, income, marital status, educational level and overall satisfaction. Results of the present study revealed a significantly higher satisfaction among patients who attended dental clinic regularly than those who attended the clinic only when pain The highest percentage of satisfaction was observed regarding orthodontic treatment whereas; the least satisfaction was recorded for operative treatment. Fixed prosthodontic treatment demonstrated the highest patients, satisfaction regarding patient–dentist interaction. On the other hand, the highest satisfaction of technical competency was recorded for removable prosthodontic treatment.
