Abstract

The thesis introduces the linguistic phenomenon of emphasis in two different discourses: English and Modern Standard Arabic. Emphasis is used to indicate a more prominent or salient element of meaning. The study presents an analysis of this phenomenon within the framework of “Speech Acts” Theory. It includes various forms of emphasis in English and Modern Standard Arabic. The study tries to investigate this phenomenon on various levels: the phonological, the semantic, the syntactic, and finally the pragmatic level. The results of the study attempt to point out that emphasis in speech is a human tendency and it is a part of human experience. The study represents a recent and new branch of emphasis, which is called pragmatic emphasis. It explains the nature of emphasis and the different forms and distinctive features of this phenomenon. It gives a review of the previous literature that deals with the concept of emphasis. The study elucidates the general theoretical framework that is used for the analysis of emphasis in English and Modern Standard Arabic. Distinctive features of emphasis are analyzed according to different contexts of situations. The study gives an analysis of the English data. The situations classify the different categories of the form of emphasis and their correlative features. The study gives an analysis of the Arabic Data. It also expounds different contexts of situations in which “emphasis” is used in Modern Standard Arabic. Finally, the thesis investigates some similarities and differences between the two discourses, and the conclusion pinpoints the contributions of the study to linguistic research, with suggestions proposed for further research.
