Abstract

Summary
The healing process following tooth removal often resulted in a more pronounced reabsorption on the buccal aspect of the ridge than on its lingual/palatal counterpart, and it includes dimensional changes in size and shape(Schropp et al., 2003;lindhe et al., 2005).
The reduction of alveolar bone volume following tooth extraction may interfere with placement of implants and affect the treatment and success of fixed or removable prosthesis with regard to function and esthetics (Seibert et al., 1996; Schneider et al., 1999; Schropp et al., 2003). So, alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) has become a key component of contemporary clinical dentistry. Systematic reviews have demonstrated that different alveolar ridge preservation techniques do not totally eliminate post-extraction resorption. (Horváth et al., 2013 ; Morjaria et al., 2014 ).
Collagen products are used as scaffolds in extraction sockets, collagen type I is large quantities of protein in the animal body and diversely situated in the extracellular matrix of connective tissues like skin , tendon , bone and blood vessels (Wang & Carroll, 2001 ; Patino et al., 2002).
Gentmicin with collagen has been shown to decrease post-operative infectious complications and to have various beneficial effects on healing in different types of surgical applications.(Yetim et al ., 2010)
Thirty patients were selected. All patients required extraction of non restorable tooth requested implant restoration. Two surgeries were carried out for each patient; the first was extraction and alveolar ridge preservation while the second was taking core bone biopsy and implant placement. (Test groups) were treated with collagen cone blended with gentamicin or pure collagen cone while the (Control group) was treated with xenograft and collagen barrier membrane. Clinical, radiographic and histological/ histomorphometric evaluations were performed.
Within limits of our study, we can conclude that use of collagen cones blended with gentamicin in alveolar ridge preservation accelerates new bone formation and promotes bone maturation.
