Abstract

Summary
Background:
The aim of this study is the assessment of the Arabic version of ECSA (Early Childhood Screening Assessment) as a valid screening tool for early detection of emotional and behavioral problems in children aged 1 ½ to 5 y in the Egyptian pediatric population and to assess the testretest reliability of the ECSA. In primary care settings, approximately 10% of preschoolers have serious mental health problems that interfere with their current functioning in family, childcare and peer contexts. These problems are also associated with an elevated risk of future emotional, academic and relationship problems.
Subjects and Methods:
The study was an exploratory cross sectional study. The study was based on collaborative activities between the Faculty of Medicine-Psychiatry and Pediatric Departments. It was conducted in the pediatric outpatient clinic, at Beni Suef University Hospital. The study population were those served by the pediatric clinic at Faculty of Medicine, Beni Suef University. The total sample size 164 candidates from the clinic’s attendees. The caregivers completed the ECSA test, CBCL and the socio-demographic sheet by the help of the researcher.
Results:
Findings of the study reported that the ECSA is a valid tool compared to the total CBCL with sensitivity 90.5%, specificity 69.2 %, positive predictive value 30.2 % , negative predictive value 98.0%. The strength of agreement was fair as the kappa was 0.322. Findings of the study reported that the ECSA is a reliable tool as the results of test retest reliability at 2 weeks was very good (p value < 0.001, Kappa was 0.836).
