Abstract

Rivers and streams ecosystems are sensitive to many environmental stressors; human activities mainly responsible for most of these stressors. Streams in developing countries such as Egypt have suffered from severe environmental problems such as chemical and organic pollution, caused by runoff from agricultural chemicals, poorly managed industrial process, and the absence of suitable treatment of sewage and other urban wastes. The results may include the denaturation of water which is no longer sustaining healthy ecosystems to aquatic organisms.
The ecological monitoring and human health perspectives, establishing information on presence, distribution, and quantities of pollutants in samples from different matrices such as water, sediments, and edible aquatic biota provides useful information for environmental risk assessment. This can be of paramount importance in assessing the sources and the extent of pollution in this region, to put forward some recommendations, to save the whole environment in the area in clean conditions.
— The present study focused on the assessment and evaluation of present status of the hydrographic characteristics, nutrient salts and some heavy metals of Nile River-Damietta Branch, depending on the analysis of physicochemical and biological characteristics and heavy metals of the branch water and sediments through selected 12 sites (Ellesan / Ras Elbr, Ras Elbr / Elgerby, The intersection of the navigation channel with the Nile, Damietta Dam Region, Eladlia, Shrbas / Faraskoor, Elsero/Elzarqa, Bosat Kareem Eldein / Sherbein, Talkha, Smnood, Meit Ghmr, Kafr Shokr) along the branch during 2017-2018. Thus, demonstrate the effect of applicability of water treatment using different alternative eco-friendly methods and material such as using algae, macrophytes, rice husk and cement kiln dust.
