Abstract

The present study focused on the evaluation of the present status of the hydrographic characteristics, nutrient salts, and some heavy metals of Burullus Lake as well as the effect of the land-based source of different drains on the Lake during 2014-2015. Thus, demonstrate the effect of applicability of water treatment using natural material such as rice husk.
This goal was achieved through characterization of physical and chemical properties of Burullus Lake and its drains and analysis of heavy metals in water and sediment to illustrate the impact of drains on the water quality of the lake. On the other hand, wastewater treatment, which was based on the adsorption of heavy metals using the natural material ‘rice husk waste’ was applied and simulate the experimental data with Langmuir, Freundlich and Tempkin isotherm models.
A comprehensive characterization of nine drains and nine stations in the Lake in terms of its physical and chemical characteristics and analysis of heavy metals in water and sediment was performed in order to study the impact of drains on water quality of the lake through assessment of the water quality index and heavy metal pollution in sediment.
It was concluded that the drains possess a negative impact on the lake water especially on the stations in the western side of the lake. Also a good removal was achieved for heavy metals using rice husk under optimum conditions.
