Abstract

SUMMARY
T
he umbilical cord milking is a controversial technique where the umbilical cord is squeezed several times before it is clamped and cut. While not physiological or natural for newborns, the question lies as to whether it is useful in certain circumstances, namely the depressed newborn.
The aim of the current study was to investigate the influence of active umbilical cord Milking before cord clamping compared with immediate cord clamping on cardio respiratory outcomes of preterm babies requiring resuscitation (Oxygen saturation, Heart rate and Fio2) born between 28 and 34 completed weeks of gestation during neonatal resuscitation programme and to evaluate occurrence of intraventricular hemorrhage in preterm babies in both groups.
For that purpose we included 100 Neonates with gestational age between 28- 34 weeks requiring resuscitation in Tanta University hospitals from Jan, 2018 to Dec, 2018. These were divided into two groups, group A received UC milking and group B was the control group who received immediate cord clamping.
The results showed that there were no significant statistical differences between the two groups as regards to basic criteria and demographic data including age, sex, GA, DM, HTN, GDM and indications for resuscitation.
The results also showed that there were significant differences between the two groups as regards to HR, Spo2, Fio2, PEEP, MAP and PIP. This means that umbilical cord milking may provide a benefit as regards to these parameters.
The results also showed that there were reduction in occurrence of intraventricular hemorrhage in umbilical cord milking group than immediate cord clamping group.
