Abstract

The aim of the current study was to assess and compare doctorpatient
relationship among patients attending outpatient’s clinics in
internal medicine, gynecology and obstetrics and pediatrics departments.
This study was conducted as descriptive study in Alkhabiry health care
center and AOI hospital in Cairo to identify the issues that are important
to patients visiting Outpatients departments. No significant difference
between both places regarding total score of physician knowledge about
doctor patient relationship (p=0.8).
A statistically significant difference between physicians in both
facilities as regard all aspects of doctor patient relationship was detected
except communication skills. As regard Professionalism and reliability,
and team work, where AOI hospital majority of physicians ranked as very
good or exceptional compared to Alkhabiry center, as the majority of
physicians in this center ranked as good.
Significant good history and physical skills and clinical care in
younger doctors was observed in AOI hospital (p=0.27, 0.29
respectively). On the other hand no significant difference was observed in
other items of doctor observation checklist in AOI hospital
(professionalism, communication skills, ethical practice and team work)
and between age and all aspects in Al Khabiry PHC).
Results of the current study show no significant relation was
found between gender of physicians and all items of the observational
checklist (professionalism, communication skills, history taking and
physical skills, clinical care, ethical practice and team work). This relation was applied to AOI hospital only as all doctors in Al Khabiry
PHC were females.
The majority of patients waited for less than 15 minutes to meet
the doctor in AOI hospital while the majority waited for 16- 60 min to
meet the doctor in Alkhabiry center. (100%) and (93.6%) in AOI hospital
and Alkhabiry center respectively, did not have someone apologize for
the delay and they did not mind, also (72.1%) and (60%) in AOI hospital
and Alkhabiry center respectively, found a comfortable place to sit in the
waiting room.
