Abstract

This work is expected to provide an ideal 50% emulsion
for modern day application in water-based flexographic inks and
over print varnish. Numerous trials were undertaken to produce the
the ideal performance product from (St/BuA) emulsion copolymer
& (VAM), (®VeoVa10) and (BuA) terpolymer
emulsion, also (EA), (2-EHA) and (MMA) as terpolymer emulsion
having stable properties for a period of time (six month solid) Also,
to achieve a low coagulum of both co and terpolymers .
Two surfactant systems were used as well as changing the
monomers ratio in the presence of constant ratio of initiator.
The prepared polymers were investigated by testing: solid content %,
wet coagulum 100mesh, (g/l), particle size (nm), viscosity (cP),
molecular weight, hardness, adhesion and pH. characterisation was
undertaken using TEM, TGA and IR spectroscopy analysis.
The selected best prepared (St/BuA) emulsion co-polymer &
(VAM), (®VeoVa10) and (BuA) terpolymer emulsion were
formulated in presence of pigments and other ingredients as
flexographic inks water base and investigated by testing: PH,
viscosity, degree of dispersion and water resistance. The prepared
emulsion Co-ter polymers were conducted to incorporate in
standard formulation of water base flexographic inks and compared
with the commercial polymer (Johncryl 90) in standard
formulation to study the difference between the prepared and the
trade mark emulsion polymer.
Also The selected best prepared terpolymer (EA), (2-EHA) and
(MMA) were formulated in the preparation of over print varnish for v sample No K. This may be resulting (poor varnish transfer,
picking, piling and may rupture the paper) .
