Abstract

The PhD thesis contains six chapters, the first chapter, presenting “Introduction , The objectives of study, Tools of the study, Study plan, illustrating the main problems facing the lakes of Egypt, showing the used tool for fulfilling the study goals. The Second chapter including “Literature Review” which includes background about the previous researches and studies in the applications in Lakes managements. The third chapter mentioning the Northern Lakes, and their importance, also the challenges facing their development illustrated at the end in this Chapter. In the fourth chapter, the summarized explanation of the materials and the methods of the study and its technologies with its methodology. Results were involved in the Fifth chapter. Finally, in sixth chapter“, Conclusions, Recommendations were explained, while References are also mentioned ”.
This study dealt with management of the Northern Lakes in Egypt especially El Brullus and Edku Lakes, where applying advanced Remote Sensing techniques integrating with other technologies as Geographic Information system and other essential computer methods evaluating all the data with the field data combine forming types of the Data Fusion techniques for this purpose. Goal of the Study was Monitoring and evaluating these problems in order to reach solutions for the interface to integrated management of the northern lakes. Methods for Achieving this goal by Using Remote Sensing & Data Fusion Techniques. First the study aimed to describe both of the lakes problems focusing on the three main problems threating the lake and its aquatic life influencing the fisher economic production of the country. Phase two of the study, assessment ecosystems El Brullus and Edku Lakes by monitoring and assessing these problems suggesting solutions with reasonable rehabilitation plans for overcoming these threats trying to save and developing the lakes. Data were obtained from the National Authority of Remote Sensing and Space Science ( NARSS ). Edku Lake samples are collected from monitoring stations distributed along the lake. The main Study Conclusions were: El Burullus & Edku Lakes are under the direct threat of environmental degradation due to the continuous human-induced shrinking. Another threat arises from the removal of the coastal sand dunes bordering its coastal face. Both of the Lakes exposed to gross negligence that both Lakes Edku & El Brullus have suffered from the spread of weeds, forests and wolves, which has caused the shrinking of the area suitable for fishing by the lake. Lake Edku was subjected to all kinds of encroachments and turned into a polluted pool that caused the deaths of fish and the destruction of the fishermen’s houses. Recommendations of the study summarized in: for the Infringements and Drying problems: Determination of the geographical limits of the Egyptian lakes and this is done through the work of a reference line for the lakes ( Reference Boundary Map ), Dig a bank that separates the fish farms from the water surface of the lake, to prevent any new encroachments on the part of the owners of the farms. For the Pollution problem: Establish a purification plant for industrial, agricultural and agricultural wastewater in the lake, and obligate the companies, factories and villages that have drainage outlets on the sea and the lake to make drainage networks and connect them to the purification plant to be constructed. For the problem of Spread of aquatic plants: The method of removal of aquatic plants in a studied manner and not random by each species significantly lead to growth again and thus the sustainability of economic exploitation, Use the plants of the lake to purify the pollutants for a period of time after treatment of waste water discharged by the lake and follow the concentration of heavy elements in the tissues until it reaches the permitted concentrations and then used as feed for lives.
Finally, this study recommended mitigating and management of the most important problems in the Northern Lakes in Egypt, introducing and recommending efficient plans to reach the proper Lake management.
