Abstract It has been established that quinones and hydroquinones constitute an important scaffold existingin many biologically active compounds. These moieties are considered as privileged structure fragments in modern medicinal chemistry, owing to theiraffinity towardsvarious biotargets and their broad pharmacological actionssuch as anticancer, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antihypertensive and antiprotozoal activities.Encouraged by the above-mentioned facts and as a continuation of theresearch programmade in this lab, a number of compounds containing quinone andhydroquinone functionssubstituted or fused with heterocyclic ringswas synthesized. Some of the newly synthesized compounds were selected by the national cancer institute (NCI) to be screened for their anticancer activity while some of them were evaluated for their ability to inhibit the synthesis of the inflammatory mediators through the blockade of COX-2 and 15-LOX activities. Moreover, some of the novel compounds weretested for their antibacterial as well as antifungal activities. Very encouraging findings were obtained in all aspects. |
