Abstract

Cupressaceae is the most widely distributed family of the conifers that includes 27 genera of evergreen ornamental shrubs and more commonly trees. It can be found in all continents except Antarctica. Genus Cupressusis one of the most important genera within family Cupressaceae.
It contains 25 ornamental species distributed in tropical and subtropical regions. There are two types of cypresses, old and new world cypresses. It is important to mention that all cypress plants are extremely allergenicdue to their pollen grains. In Egypt, there are two Cupressusspecies, C. sempervirens, which is considered one of the old world cypresses and C. macrocarpa, which is considered one of the new world cypresses.
Traditionally, genus Cupressusis used in rheumatism and whooping cough. It is also used to promote venous circulation to the kidney and bladder area and to improve bladder tone, thus it is used as acoadjuvant in the treatment of urinary incontinence.
The leaves and cones of cypress plants have been used as a folk remedy as antiseptic, antipyretic, anthelminthic, astringent and anti-inflammatory. It is important to mention that thoseplants contain appreciable amountof essential oils, which possess mainly antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal activities, also they are responsible for the ornamental use of Cupressus plants.from this point, it is important to consider Cupressus plants as a possible source for biologically active metabolites, also it can be considered as a source for biologically and economically valuable compounds. There are not enough studies concerning C.macrocarpa, therefore it was decided to establish its detailed phytochemical study.
Moreover, evaluation of the activity of Cupressus extracts in management of Alzheimer’s diseaseis performed beside the antioxidant and antibacterial activities. In addition, insecticidal, antileishmanial, antiprotozoal and acetylcholinesterase inhibitory activities of the studied Cupressusessential oils were evaluated.
