Abstract

The present study adopts the view that persuasion can be achieved in a more successful way through affecting the listeners’ emotions and minds. It aims at identifying some of the linguistic devices that can be employed by preachers in the West to engage their audience emotionally and mentally. It adopts Aristotle’s theory of persuasion, calling for the integration of the ethos, pathos, and logos for a successful persuasion. Moreover, the present study adopts the hot process theories (calling for the importance of emotion arousal), the argumentation theories (calling for the centrality of the use of logical arguments in persuasion), and the message-structuring theories (examining the functions of linguistic features in a text). For persuasion through emotions, three linguistic devices are analyzed: person deixis, metaphor and Brown and Levinson’s (1987) politeness forms. As for persuasion through reason, the study uses Cockcroft and Cockcroft’s (2005) models of argumentation. The data consists of sixteen speeches delivered by Khalid Yasin. Data analysis shows that Yasin’s use of person deixis, metaphor, and polite forms positively affects the persuasion process. Through these devices, Yasin attempts to arouse both positive and negative emotions in his audience in order to convince them of his message. Data analysis also proves that Yasin employs Cockcroft and Cockcroft’s (2005) models of argument to positively affect the persuasion process by addressing the audience’s mentality. Through these linguistic devices, he attempts to persuade his audience of the major themes in Islam, especially the logicality of the existence of a creator for this universe.
