Abstract

Industry with its modern concept has been known in Egypt since the early nineteenth century. After the First World War, industrial activity in Egypt began to increase depending on natural resources. The industrial sector consumes 12% of the water. With increasing population and scarcity of water, which are the most important challenges facing Egypt, we must rationalize the use of resources and the application of cleaner production technologies to reduce industrial consumption and re-use the industrial wastes.
The industrial wastewater management is one of the most important goals for sustainable development. Therefore, this study aims to find the optimum environmental solution for the management of industrial wastewater in the industrial zones in Egypt. The industrial city of Quesna in the governorate of Monofeya as a case study and model of the industrial zones in Egypt, where ten (10) main industrial sectors were found in this city represented by 150 companies. These industrial sectors are food, pharmaceutical, chemicals, plastic, metal, electrical and engineering, paper, agriculture, and tannery sectors.
The study evaluated the current situation in Quesna industrial zone and proposed four different scenarios for the management of industrial wastewater. The results showed pollution loads of 16 parameters of industrial wastewater. Industrial drainage and treatment methods have been developed in each of the applied scenarios and compared to each other, technically, financially and environmentally to determine the optimum environmental solution for the management of industrial wastewater in the Quesna industrial zone, where this solution may be different in another industrial zone but could be applied for any industrial zone in Egypt while applying he same methodologies to determine the optimum environmental solution for the management of industrial wastewater.
Results of the study showed that the application of the optimum environmental solution in Quesna industrial zone in addition to the grouping of industrial sectors having similar industrial wastewater together in one group before discharging to the centralized industrial wastewater treatment plant to facilitate their management, processing and reuse in industrial sectors.
The study put a system for choosing the optimum solution for industrial wastewater management in any industrial zones by several steps and applying several scenarios with comparing between them technically, financially and environmentally.
The study recommended that the produced procedure to choose the optimum solution for industrial wastewater management is preferred to be applied for all new industrial zones to minimize the cost with optimization for the technical and environmental aspects.
