Abstract

The thesis presents a study of the poems about Egypt in the era before, during and after colonialism. By the time of the British Occupation (1882- 1922) Egypt became an infinite source of inspiration for Orientalist, colonial and post-colonial studies. Poetic works that include colonial imagery reflecting the influence of imperial ideas are thoroughly examined. The thesis also investigates how the body of poetic work was used to promote England’s colonial project. Moreover, the thesis also studies the development of the image of Egypt in the pre-colonial poetry leading up to colonization. The body of works written during the years of colonization is also examined and compared to the poems written before colonization. The focus is on the changing perspectives of Egypt through imagery. The main aim of the thesis is to show the different representations of the image of Egypt throughout the poetry of the nineteenth century. The studying of the different images and representations of Egypt led to the conclusion that they had an undeniable influence on the British Empire, which directly resulted in Britain’s colonial project.
