المستخلص
The aim of this study is to identify the identity crisis and the social and psychological variables associated with the use of social networks (the virtual world) by the university youth. The researcher used the descriptive approach. The data was collected through the personal interview, the questionnaire, the identity crisis scale, an indicator for psychological variables, and another indicator of the social variables related to the use of social networks by university youth. The sample consisted of (120) male and female students selected randomly from the faculty of pharmacy to represent one of the scientific faculties, and Al Alsun to represent one of the literary colleges, from the universities of Ain Shams to represent one of the public universities and the International University of Egypt to represent a private university. The researcher used the theory of Eriksson and James Marsha to explain the identity crisis, As well as the theory of the media environment and interactivity and the spiral of silence and uses and expectations for the interpretation of social networks . These theories are the most appropriate ones for the current study where social networks are the most prominent mean of mass communication that allow individuals, communities, minorities and the majority to express their opinion . The university youth play a positive role in choosing the mean that satisfy their multiple needs, whether it is cognitive, emotional, social or political.
