Abstract

I
nfertility is a common public health problem in Africa since childlessness is seen as a major personal tragedy and can result in marital instability and suicidal tendencies.
Though there are other advanced and efficient methods of evaluating the uterine cavity, cervix and fallopian tubes in women presenting with infertility, Hysterosalpingogram is still widely used because it is cheap, readily available, non invasive, easy to interpret and has the ability to demonstrate dynamic free contrast spillage. It is usually the first line of imaging evaluation of the fallopian tubes in infertility, especially in developing countries such as ours.
A wide variety of uterine and tubal abnormalities can be demonstrated with hysterosalpingography. Some of these abnormalities have an impact on the patient’s fertility and require treatment if conception is to be achieved.
The other advantage is that HSG is postulated to have therapeutic role also where any small debris that is blocking the tubes gets dislodged due to pressure from the installed contrast and the iodinated component in the contrast is also said to have some anti inflammatory properties in non specific tubal infections. The disadvantage is that it is an ionizing modality, slightly invasive and doesn’t provide comment on extra luminal problems.
This study reveals that there was a relatively high incidence of tubal disease in the women presenting with infertility, this was commonly as a result of infection and inflammatory process, so the practice of good personal hygiene and the need to seek medical attention with the onset of symptoms should be the emphasis.
